MADISON–It wasn’t a short wait for 195-pounder Matt Vanden Heuvel. It was about two-and-a-half hours into division two wrestling before he finally stepped onto the mat.
“It felt like about five hours,” said Denmark wrestling head coach Tim Kapinos.
Denmark senior Matt Vanden Heuvel dominated in his first round match, winning by a score of 13-5.
“He set the tone early,” said an impressed Kapinos. “…There was no way for [Hall] to stop it.”
Prairie du Chien’s Peyton Hall was no match for Vanden Heuvel explosiveness, going down 8-3 quickly after the second period.
Finally, though, Hall caught a break. He found a burst of energy with Vanden Heuvel on his back.
It wouldn’t be enough.
Vanden Heuvel squirmed his way out of the bottom position and got back to his feet, eventually winning 13-5.
“I was telling him to belly-down,” Kapinos said. “The only way to lose in a match like that is to get pinned, so we didn’t want that.”
On Friday, Matt Vanden Heuvel face off with Bennett Paulson of Amery, who has a standing record of 40-2.
