The Denmark News
On Friday night, I had the pleasure of attending Play-by-Play Productions’ presentation of "Next to Normal" at the Webb Theatre on the St. Norbert campus. Among the show's tremendously talented cast is Denmark Middle School and Denmark High School Choir Director Lucas Jordan who gives an incredible performance as Henry. I was extremely impressed, and for this week's editorial, I would like to share my thoughts on the production.
"Next to Normal" is a 2008 rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. It tells the story of a modern American family dealing with the challenges and complexities of mental illness. The musical is a raw look at the grim realities of grief, generational trauma, loss, mental health treatment and depression. Through a series of twists and turns, the audience is given a front-row seat to the unraveling of a bipolar mother and the pain and chaos felt by those who love her. Play-by-Play Productions has been providing top-notch performances for audiences for 11 years as the Green Bay area’s first professional regional theatre company. Their production of “Next to Normal” is being presented through a special arrangement with Musical Theatre International.
Although I am a fan of musical theater, my knowledge of the wide array of different shows is admittedly rather narrow. Before Friday, I had never seen a production of nor heard the music from "Next to Normal" and was not sure what to expect. But, wanting to support Lucas and always willing to discover a new show, I decided to purchase a ticket for the production's opening night and could not be happier with my choice.
In my humble opinion, the team at Play-by-Play Productions knocked this performance out of the park and delivered a compelling and moving piece of art that was both thought-provoking and gut-wrenching. The cast is overflowing with talent from top to bottom, and each actor exquisitely brought their complicated and multi-dimensional characters to life in a remarkable way. The raw emotion on display throughout was palpable and radiated off the performers. The staging of the show was also top notch with the production team perfectly utilizing the Webb Theatre's unique multi-sided stage to make the audience feel as if they were truly witnessing the events firsthand.
I was truly moved by the performance and know the show's themes and messages will stick with me for quite some time. To me, the production was a reminder of what true art can really be and how it can affect you deeply when presented with determination and care. I am so grateful I chose to check out this production and will definitely be keeping an eye on what Play-by-Play has in store for future shows.
And here is the best part--you do not have to take my word for it. If you appreciate great theater and want to see just what I am talking about, you can see for yourself this weekend. Play-by-Play Productions will be continuing their presentation of "Next to Normal" in the Webb Theater this weekend at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at ticketleap.events/tickets/play-by-play-theatre/nexttonormal. PLEASE NOTE: This production does contain adult themes including depictions of mental health conditions and drug use, themes of bereavement and strong language. It is recommended for ages 13 and up.
The show is directed by Mary Ehlinger and stars Kelsey Denae, Greg Pragel, Betsy Sorensen, Tommy Dubnicka, Lucas Jordan and Noah Matthew. I highly encourage you to take the opportunity to check out this one-of-a-kind show!
