Last Wednesday, the Village of Denmark received some new and unique temporary public art installations celebrating America. That day, Denmark Connects and their Crochet Art Club mounted multiple patriotic displays at a number of public locations throughout town.

“Yarn Bombing” is the practice of creating unique crochet art pieces and installing them in public places for all to enjoy. After seeing other communities find success with similar initiatives, Denmark Connects decided to bring Yarn Bombing to Denmark with their first displays going up last summer.

For this year’s display, the Crochet Art Club has been working on the pieces since January, and they selected a patriotic theme to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary this year. Over 16 sets of hands have lent their talents to the effort with some projects featuring the work of four different artists.

After over four months of work, the Crochet Art Club is finally ready to display their creations. On Wednesday, volunteers hung various red, white and blue yarn formations on outdoor features across town including Blossom’s, Village Hall, the Veterans Memorial Park concession stand and the Activity Center entrance at 141 Highridge Avenue. The art will remain up until the end of July.

The Crochet Art Club offers free knitting lessons which can be accessed by attending their bi-weekly “Mixed Fiber Arts Group” held at the Denmark Activity Center. Their next session will be on Thursday, June 4 from 6 until 8 p.m.
