On Sunday, Gatherings 43 in Denmark was host to a special event commemorating six decades of service to the community. That afternoon, the Maribel Lions hosted their 60th Anniversary Celebration in the hall featuring speeches, awards, prizes and reflection on over half a century of commitment to community betterment. The Denmark News was in attendance to report on this historic occasion.

On Saturday, the Denmark High School Athletic Atrium was transformed into a swanky dance venue for an annual spring tradition. That night, the DHS Junior class hosted this year’s Prom with a theme of “The Great Gatsby”. This was the first-ever Prom to be held in the Atrium, and the Class of 2026 successfully decorated the space complete with “chandeliers” and hundreds of strands of twinkle lights.

During last week's Denmark Village Board meeting, a major topic of discussion was a potential new park to be installed on the corner of Broadway and Pine Street. This topic was first officially raised during the board's February meeting when they approved Parkitecture to draft some preliminary designs for the space.

That day, the Denmark Knights of Columbus Father Platta Council #4735 hosted the MacDowell Male Chorus for a second annual concert featuring a diverse line up of songs that showcased the group’s unique talents. Last week, motorists and pedestrians passing through downtown Denmark could see the beginnings of a new building taking shape. Throughout the past week, crews have been hard at work pouring the base level of the soon-to-be new Bank First branch building on the site of the former Denmark State Bank headquarters.

On Thursday, Denmark Connects welcomed volunteers and supporters to the Denmark Community Activity Center for a special dinner celebrating the group’s recent impacts. That night, they hosted their first ever “Ripple Effects” event at the center featuring food, socialization and reflection. The Denmark News was in attendance to learn more.

Last Monday, the Denmark Village Board held their monthly meeting in Village Hall. Topics of discussion included the potential sale of the former Village Hall, several recommendations from the Village Plan Commission and the possible addition of a new park to the municipality.

Last Tuesday, the Cooperstown Town Board held their monthly meeting in the Town Hall in Rosecrans. This meeting would serve as the last for outgoing Supervisor Hank Kouba who was unsuccessful in his reelection bid as well as outgoing Chairman Dave Blakeslee who did not run for another term.

Last Wednesday, the Village of Denmark Economic Development Committee hosted a second public informational meeting regarding a potential new neighborhood to be built on the southwest side of the Village in between Hager Road and County Highway R. That night, the committee welcomed Lexington Homes Vice President Michelle Stimpson to explain the developer’s intentions to roughly 30 community residents who attended.

On Saturday, hundreds of people from across the area and beyond descended on the Northeast Asphalt gravel pit on County Highway BB for an annual spring tradition supporting a great local organization. That day, the Denmark Lions hosted their yearly Consignment Auction fundraiser in the gravel pit featuring hundreds upon hundreds of items of all shapes, sizes and prices to bid on.

Last week, voters across the area and beyond took to the polls for this year's spring elections. Along with the highly contested and widely advertised Wisconsin Supreme Court and State Superintendent races, local municipalities also held votes for municipal governments with a variety of positions up for election in each. On Wednesday, March 26, representatives from a number of Denmark area community organizations had the opportunity to attend a special learning event aimed at increasing their cohesiveness and effectiveness. That night, twelve area residents representing five organizations attended a dinner and workshop hosted by Mike Breininger and Tom Mosgaller, authors of “Pulling Together - A Handbook for Community Change”.

This week, Juniors at Denmark High School (DHS) are putting together the final preparations for an annual spring tradition months in the making. Prom 2025 is set for this weekend, and students are set for a night of fun and music. This year’s DHS Prom Court consists of six royal couples who will reign over Saturday night’s dance. This year’s theme is “The Great Gatsby”, and the dance will take place from 7:30-11:00 p.m.

On Friday, March 28, Denmark High School opened its doors for its annual Career Fair in the school’s original gymnasium. The event provided students from the school’s four grade levels the opportunity to meet with representatives from roughly 40 area employers. A wide range of career paths were showcased including public safety, cosmetology, construction, finance, marketing, business, trades and manufacturing among others.

In the 1950s, the United States continued improving its highway system. Part of these improvements included building bypasses so highways would go around small cities and villages instead of right through their downtowns. While this removed people from downtowns, it provided a better and safer travel option for motorists.
