Manure Spreading, Runoff Under Fire

MADISON — When one-third of Kewaunee County’s private wells tested positive for bacterial contamination in 2014, some pointed to a massive cattle population and others pointed to faulty septic systems. Ongoing study has linked manure from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) to the county’s polluted groundwater and has influenced proposed revisions to the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) manure spreading requirements.

By Kelly FentonThe Denmark News DENMARK – The Denmark High School boys basketball team couldn’t overcome Noah Mueller’s 28 points and fell, 56-51, on Monday night in Denmark.Mueller rained in six three-pointers, including five in the first half when the Mustangs rolled to a 15-point lead and eventually led by 11 at the half.The Vikings rallied to eventually cut the deficit to 44-42 on a three-pointer and a driving lay-up by Josh Pelischek with 6:20 remaining.

Denmark rallies, but comes up short in critical loss to first-place Marines
DENMARK – The Denmark High School had no answer for Jacob Poetzl in the first half nor for Matt Wagner in the second and suffered a critical 63-58 loss to first-place Marinette in North Eastern Conference action on Friday night in Denmark.Poetzl poured in 18 of his 26 before halftime, while Wagner, the Marines’ top scorer scored 13 of his 17 in the second half, just enough to stave off a Viking rally from 11 down.Brady Jens erupted for 22 points for Denmark, whose 5-game winning streak ended.

Gettin' To Know Ya: Bob Bielinski
By Matt Taicher for The Denmark NewsDENMARK--Bob Bielinski lived his life with joy and with few regrets. He was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Green Bay and he was 95 years old. Bob had two brothers and sisters, one of whom passed away before him.Bob graduated from Denmark High School in 1939. He enlisted into the Army at the age of 23 and was deployed into WWII in 1944 and served for 22 months.

Maribel Grain Brings New Life to Village
 By Charles Collier, The Denmark NewsMARIBEL—Maribel Grain Company’s new gas station and an adjoining Burger King location are expected to be completed by Memorial Day, capping the most aggressive economic development Maribel has seen in some time.Over the last seven years, the Village of Maribel has slowly become known as a community on the decline. Rabas Garage closed but a few years ago, preceded by Denmark State Bank’s departure from its branch there.
