Many in the Denmark area were taken by surprise recently when the village was left without power due to a fire at the substation near Shirley. However, this isn’t the first time that the entire village was without power.

Over the past couple weeks, I have had the pleasure of helping assemble this year's FFA Special Section for the newspaper. In doing so, I have had the chance to see all the amazing things the Denmark FFA and FFA Alumni have been able to accomplish and provide over the last year through the awesome photos and articles that were submitted.

At this month's Denmark School Board meeting held last Monday evening in the high school media center, along with the usual reports from administrators or staff, two students were also present to give their own update to the board.

Last Saturday night, Neshota Park was home to a unique winter adventure for all to enjoy. That evening, the Friends of Neshota Park held their annual candlelight hike through the wooded trails just north of Denmark. The event is a yearly tradition for the Friends of Neshota, a group of concerned local citizens who are dedicated to maintaining the local park and providing great activities there.

This Sunday, February 26 from 1-4 pm, the Denmark Historical Society will be hosting a special open house at their museum, located in the basement of the former BMO Harris Bank. Visitors are welcome to come, visit, learn and share about our community's history.

The Midwest. It’s known for its weather seasons, agriculture and friendly, hardworking, sports-loving people. We talk about the weather incessantly; tornadoes, heat and cold, winter storms, flooding, and so much more. But one thing that sets us apart from the other parts of the country is our lack of earthquakes.

On Saturday, February 25, St. James Catholic Parish will host its annual "Dinner & Dance" fundraiser at Gatherings 43 in Denmark. The event is the parish's yearly fundraiser and will feature dinner, drinks, music, amazing prize opportunities and fun for all. 

Last Friday, Inspired Grounds, in partnership with OneDenmark, hosted their first ever "Family Game Night Friday" in the former BMO Harris Bank building in downtown Denmark.

On Friday, February 10, at a ceremony at the Army National Guard's Regional Training Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Cooperstown native and Denmark High School graduate, Randy Remiker, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the New Mexico National Guard.

Police officers who have served Denmark, as well as officers who are Denmark High School Alums, were honored last Tuesday evening at the Brown County Sheriff's Office Benevolent Association Meeting by receiving awards for their outstanding service last year.

For decades, the annual Tractor Pull that took place every Denmark Lions Weekend was a celebrated tradition in the Denmark community. For many, it was an integral part of the yearly picnic drawing large crowds year after year.

Many people have called our village home. They’ve gone beyond our Midwest neighborhoods and small town population to make a difference elsewhere.

Every once in a while, we get a chance to hear from those who are grateful for where they were born and raised, and who want to reflect fondly on their roots.

Last Thursday evening, the Denmark Performing Arts Center hosted a one-of-a-kind concert for the ages. That night, the Nashville Showcase fundraiser concert was held featuring three amazingly talented musicians performing incredible country songs of their own creation.

On Saturday, February 18, Neshota Park will be the site of a one-of-a-kind event. That night, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Friends of Neshota Park will host their annual "Candlelight Hike" through the park.

Last week, All Saints Catholic School in Denmark took part in the nationwide celebration of "Catholic Schools Week". CSW is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Catholic schools across the country observe this week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.
