While it may not exactly feel like it weatherwise, according to the calendar, spring has officially sprung and individuals and organizations are preparing for the soon-to-come warm up. The Denmark Community Gardens is no exception, with organizers planning and preparing for the spring planting season.
Thrifters, bargain seekers and community-minded shoppers now have a new local destination for new and gently-used clothing items as the Denmark Community Closet settles into their new location at 128 Main Street. We stopped by on Friday to learn more.
One and all are encouraged to stop out to the Northeast Asphalt gravel pit on County Highway BB this Saturday for this year’s Denmark Lions Club Consignment Auction featuring hundreds of items going to the top bidder to raise funds for the organization. Last week, we spoke with Lion Susan Selner to learn more about what is in store for this year’s attendees.
On Sunday afternoon, the greater Denmark community is invited to Denmark High School for an afternoon showcasing young artistic talent. That day, the Denmark High School (DHS) and Denmark Middle School (DMS) band and art departments will come together for this year’s Band Extravaganza and Art Show in the high school gymnasium and athletic atrium.
During this month's Village of Denmark Board of Trustees meeting, a considerable amount of time was spent discussing issues with drainage in Daybreak Estates, specifically on properties on Woodrow Street and Hidden Hollow Court. The problems surround a stream, labeled as an "unnamed tributary of the Neshota River" which runs west to east, snaking through Daybreak Estates on the northern end of the village.
Returning to our historical tour through downtown, this week's entry brings us to the large stone structure on the corner of Main Street and Broadway. For 120 years now, the two-story building has served the Denmark community through a variety of purposes and still remains an active business to this day.
Denmark State Bank was founded in 1909 to provide banking services to the growing community of Denmark. They completed their first permanent building in November 1909 on Main Street.
On March 14 and 15, the Denmark Wrestling Club competed in this year’s Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Team State Tournament in Wisconsin Dells. The local wrestlers made an impressive showing with the 3rd-5th Grade Team placing 3rd out of 16 teams and the 6th-8th Grade Team placing 7th out of 16 teams. Congratulations boys! Over this past weekend, seniors from the Denmark High School Band traveled with Band Director Andy Pagel to the Windy City on a special trip. While in Chicago, students attended a candlelit performance by a professional string quartet, explored the Miracle Mile and visited the Shed Aquarium, Willis Tower and Alder Planetarium. The group even had a chance to enjoy some traditional Chicago deep-dish pizza at the legendary Gino’s.
